    How do you ensure the continuous flow of sales and other positive aspects that your site gives you? Go on with your usual distribution and promotion of your print ads. As with these prints, your site should be updated in order to have people coming back for recent information. It would be a waste of time and a disappointment for them to go to your site to see the latest and get the read the same things that they have read like one or two years ago. If your site is like this, you have just signed an invisible termination of contract of a useful and worthy site.

    Update your site from time to time. Give your readers the latest and not the latest some years back. Having readers read outdated information will not win you any points. There is also a possibility that these people would never try to visit your site again after getting that impression. From the time you started your site, you should have been aware of the responsibility that comes with it. Sites are cheaper than any reading materials that you need to send on a time basis. Think about it, cost-effective and very accessible. Give the readers what they need and update your site.

    Put reference section where you can note things like the recent changes you have made in your site. This lets people know that your site is being maintained. Nothing like a good reminder every now and then for people who are too status-conscious.

    Remove outdated pages but make them still accessible for those who may need to go back to old information. This information not only becomes little of use also can be confusing. Removing them often would be wiser than having them pile up and taking so much of your site space and making you pay much more. Why continue to confuse and anger the people by giving them this information when you can give them far better things than that?

    Check the search engines constantly if your site is still as accessible as before. Check also if people are finding it easy to search for your site in these engines. There are some search engines that uses meta tags that holds keywords and description of your site for easy access. You could try writing a page that explains your company, what it does; its services and other resources you offer. Different search engines have different preferences in the way your sites should be displayed. There are those who prefer meta tags and those that choose content page.

    A site that can change, evolve, and grows is a definite candidate for the kind of site that people keep coming back for more.

    If you are a seasoned Internet marketer, then it is common knowledge that submitting to web directories can dramatically increase your page rank. If you are a newbie webmaster, then you might be quite in doubt as to how web directories can do for you. This article would relay to you what exactly is a web directory, how they work, and how you can use them in promoting your site. By the end of the article, I want you to go add your link to one of the web directories on the Internet and see how it would work for you.

    What are web directories?

    Simply put, a Web Directory is a collection of web sites presented in a categorized format. I suppose that you know how Yellow Pages looks like, a web directory is pretty much the same thing, only this time websites are categorized in such a way that internet users can easily navigate through them and find the website that they need.

    How do web directories work?

    A web directory submission is one type of marketing strategy you can employ. By simply adding your website in web directories it can dramatically increase your site’s exposure and your pagerank. Why so? Of course aside for submitting your website name, you would naturally add your website link or URL to the site. This constitute for one back link. What do you need outbound links for? Increasing the number of your outbound links would relatively increase your pagerank.

    A pagerank simply refers to your position in search engines results. For instance, if an online user searches for "car parts", along with your SEO-content and bunch of good back links, you would likely hit the first few pages of the search results, thus increasing the exposure of your website. If back links are what you are after, then submitting your site to web directories is one effective way to get some.

    Web directories are also one way of acquiring permanent links. Permanent links are very valuable since you would have your live link posted on web directories for good or at least during the lifetime of the web directory where you posted your link. It is important to take note though, that offering permanent links are still in the discretion of web directories owner.

    Aside from improving your page rank, web directories are also a form of web advertising. In addition to using search engines, online users also rely on web directories to direct them to certain websites they are searching for. Since websites in web directories are categorized accordingly, navigating through them is easy and convenient. If for example one online user is about to buy bathroom tiles, he would probably go to the category under 'home improvement' and if your related site is under that, you are most likely to have an instant visitor, thus increasing your traffic. In the online world, traffic is everything. If you get more visitors drop by your site, then that means you have a number of potential clients, thus increasing your sales.

    Choosing a web directory

    There are three types of web directories – free, paid and niche directories. Free web directories are, of course, the natural choice for webmasters with a tight budget. Some free web directories requires a reciprocal link and some don’t. Reciprocal links are simply links of the web directory's URL that you are required to post in your own site. It's a give and take concept. When you post your website to a web directory, you need to return the favor by posting their URL to your site as well.

    The only drawback with some free directories is that they may not be properly maintained. Spam sites may find their way into these free directories because they may lack appropriate monitoring. Then again, there are free web directories that can offer as much quality links than paid directories.

    If you have the budget for it, you can also opt to submit your site to paid directories. These types of websites may charge as low as $10 per year. Some popular directories, like Yahoo, can charge as high as $299 as annual fees. The rate that paid web directories charge is relative to the website's pagerank. If the web directory site you are submitting to have PR9, then prepare to shell out a big chunk of your advertising budget. A web directory with a PR3 or PR4 would normally charge low.

    The third type of web directory is a niche web directory. These are web directory sites that cater to a particular group of websites. For instance, a web directory with the niche under "business" would only allow submission from business websites. Posting your websites into niche web directories would give you better hits since you have a bigger exposure to your target market.

    How to submit your website

    First, you need to find a good web directory site. Check the web directory and be sure it does not contain several spam sites. One way to find out if spam sites are listed is by doing a search for terms like “Viagra”, “Sex” etc… If you notice a large number of search results, then that directory is not a good one. Because in worst-case scenario, your own website may even be penalized by some search engines.

    The second thing you need to do is to choose the appropriate category where you should add your website to. You would get to your target audience better if you place your website in the right category. If not, you would not get much traffic from your possible visitors.

    The next thing is to write a good description of your website. These are snippets that would describe what your website has to offer. Description should be short and catchy. It is also a good idea to make sure to write a good meaningful description as many directories do not approve websites with bad descriptions.

    The last thing to do, which is very important and the part that is often take for granted, is to check if your link is working! You don't want to get your website URL misspelled or anything like that, hence the whole process would be to no avail.

    Formulating a Website Design Strategy

    Fred R. David, a business strategy author, defines strategy as "the art and science of formulating, implementing, and evaluating cross functional decisions that enable an organisation to achieve its objective", Strategic Management, Prentice-Hall (1985).

    My definition of Website design strategy is "the process by which to optimise your website to take advantage of the opportunities in the external environment, whilst addressing the threats that are likely to impact on it".

    Formulating a website design strategy is very important to the success of your website. By laying out your strategy at the start, even before choosing a domain name, can save months, even years of redesign and wasted promotion efforts.

    Even if your site is already established, there are a number of basics that need to be questioned to ensure you are heading in the right direction. The answers to these questions will form the basis for your web design strategy.

    1) Firstly, what is the purpose of your site? Is it a marketing tool, a shopping cart to enable online sales, or both? What are your objectives?

    2) Secondly, what are your strengths and weaknesses? if you were in your visitor's "shoes", would you buy from the site and what would make you return?

    3) Thirdly, how is your income going to be generated? Will it be from advertising, from site membership fees, from affiliate programs, or from selling your own product? What are your capabilities and how will you use them to maintain a competitive advantage over your rivals?

    The answers to the above will determine your content strategy and this in turn will have implications for all other aspects of your web site design.

    1) THE PURPOSE OF YOUR SITE

    Most websites serve one main purpose - they are either informational or they are e-commerce sites.

    Informational sites usually make their income from membership fees, advertising, commissions, or selling at the back end.

    E-commerce sites usually make their income by selling a product or service.

    It is often difficult to combine both into the same website because an informational site needs to provide unbiased information about the topic of the website, while an e-commerce site needs to generate sales and use direct marketing tactics.

    The main objective of informational sites therefore needs to be to maximize your site membership, or your subscriber list. Site usage could be regarded as the internet's equivalent of intangible assets.

    The more information the site gathers about its subscribers, the more valuable the list is because it allows marketing to be targeted at specific groups of people, defined by where they live, how much they earn, whether they are male or female, etc? However it is also VERY important that any subscriber list is entirely opt-in because they want information from you.

    Your objectives must therefore be: 1) Clear focused and specific 2) Measurable 3) Feasible and suitable for the industry you are focusing on.

    2) IN YOUR VISITOR'S SHOES

    Always put yourself in your website visitor's "shoes". If you were the website visitor, what would keep you on the site. What makes your site sticky?

    By doing this you can easily identify your strengths and weaknesses!

    The more focused your site it, the more likely you are to satisfy your visitors requirements, and the more likely they are to return and use your site in future.

    The layout and navigation of your web pages are going to affect the usability of your site. It is very important to get these right and to know which web technologies to use. Your website layout and navigation can make or break your site.

    Even more important is your Content strategy because you need to provide content that is likely to be targeted at your visitors. Are you providing the content your visitors are looking for?

    3) HOW YOUR INCOME IS GENERATED

    Informational sites usually generate their revenue from membership fees, advertising, commissions from affiliate programs and making sales to their members or subscribers using off-the-web marketing, for example through a newsletter or direct mail. Selling is the secondary objective.

    The main objective of an e-commerce site is to promote an effective marketing message and to make the buying process as easy as possible. Creating a marketing base is the secondary objective. They usually have two types of customers, transactional and relational.

    The purchase decisions of transactional customers are influenced by short-term reasons such as price, convenience, and/or availability.

    Relational customers have built up a relationship with the business usually through previous contact. Their purchase decisions are based more on the customer relationship that has been built up, quality of support, and knowledge of the product or service or brand.

    You need to identify where your market is and what your capabilities are. You need to identify what gives you a competitive advantage over your rivals.

    Once you have done that you will be able to generate qualified traffic, turn the traffic into qualified leads, and turn the leads into customers.

    Your website strategy is therefore critical to the success of your site. It must be focused, to ensure your site is visible and attracts qualified leads, and your web pages must be usable to ensure you can convert your traffic.

  • If you want to be a successful freelance writer today, you've got to write a lot. This is not only because the competition for freelancers is intense, but it's also because much of the writing that you do every day won't be writing that you can sell -- it's extra promotional writing that every writer needs to do.

    Here's an unpleasant freelance writing truth: if you don't promote your work, you don't sell.

    Therefore, you can look on your freelancing career as having two parts: creation, and promotion. You promotional writing includes building a name for yourself, by creating a Web site, or a blog, which gives you visibility. When an editor or publisher types your name into Google, he or she will be looking for some examples of your writing. Building this visibility takes time, however it's essential. No one is going to hire you if they have no idea of what you can do.

    Here are five tips to help you to write faster and write more so you can achieve the freelance writing success that you want:

    Tip 1. Plan your writing day

    Whether you're writing "day" is a couple of hours you spend writing after you've put the kids to bed at night, or it's a real eight to ten hour day, you have to make the most of each minute.

    On Sunday evening, take ten minutes to plan what you want to achieve in the coming week. Make a list of what you must do. However, you should have no more than five items on this list, because a lengthy "must do" list is intimidating and breeds procrastination. Your weekly list is not a catch-all list, it's highly selective. Keep your list small, so that no matter what happens, you know you can easily complete these items.

    Then, before you begin writing for the day, make another, short list of items to do.

    I like to create all my lists by hand, because it helps me focus, and there's something satisfying about striking an item off the list.

    Tip 2. Have multiple projects in various stages of development

    At any one time, I may have ten or a dozen projects in development. Half of these are client and editorial projects, the others are my own. The benefit of having multiple projects is that it helps to eliminate boredom. You'll have to decide for yourself whether this works for you: experiment.

    I also have five or six promotional projects going on at the same time. The big benefit of all this work is that it keeps me writing -- I have to find ways to write more, because I need to write more. The key to achieving this level of activity is to make all your writing fun -- see Tip 5.

    Tip 3. Use affirmations to kickstart your subconscious mind

    Writing is a process of discovery. You can't know what you're going to write before you write it, and often what you write is a complete surprise. This is because you're mining your subconscious mind, which makes connections for you.

    You can boost this natural process to help your subconscious mind to do its work by using affirmations. These are positive statements of what you want to achieve.

    Tip 4. Eliminate perfectionism: it doesn't have to be perfect, it just has to be done

    Perfectionism is a curse. If you want to write faster and write more, you'll have to take steps to remove your perfectionist tendencies. My favorite mantra is DDT: Do, Don't Think. Whatever you write can be edited and fixed. However, if you don't write, you have nothing to edit.

    Tip 5. Make peace with your writing self

    Your writing self is child-like. In essence, it's you, at around six to eight years of age, with experiences added. Your writing self loves fun, and it loves to play. This means that you've got to build plenty of fun and "play" activities into your writing, no matter how much you have to write, otherwise your creativity will dry up, and you'll get no writing done at all.

    I've learned this from personal experience. I know that if I put too much pressure on my writing self, and insist that I focus only on serious projects, I'm headed for writer's block.

    Make a list of fun activities. Mine include: doing crossword puzzles, playing computer games, reading historical novels, going to the movies, and many more. Then have fun!

    Is Your Web Copy "Plain Talk"?

    It's true, we were all taught in school to express ourselves differently on paper, than the way we speak. To follow rules of grammar, and inject an artificial air of formality.

    Forgetting about this training when you write web copy is one of the best thing you can possibly do, unless you’re selling to the academic community. And forgetting about it may not be as easy as you think.

    Do you write like you’re speaking to a friend across the table?

    Maybe even use a little slang, now & then?

    Or do you worry about your high school English teacher committing suicide, if he or she were to ever stumble across your stuff?

    If so, do yourself a favor. Get over it.

    Marketing Communications should never be about trying to impress. Prospects should never have to think about what the heck you’re trying to say.

    So keep your sentences short.

    Avoid big words.

    Keep plenty of free space around your copy, so it looks easy.

    The mind can only really think of one thing at a time. If you want your prospect to concentrate on something, make sure your points don’t require more than a split second to understand.

    Look at the below example, taken from an ad for a special day care course for kids. It's put on by a government agency that promotes apple agriculture in their region.

    The point of the text is this. “Bring your kids here, because we’ll teach them something, instead of just baby-sitting them”.

    Read the example, and then the revision in plain talk.


    EXAMPLE

    This program encourages students to conduct simple investigations of apples. Students experiment, observe, and keep records as they become 'immersed" in a multi-sensory study of apples. Students will make notes in learning logs as they investigate and discuss the activities. In the learning logs the students simply record what happened during the activities and their reactions to what happened.

    Students may later use their notes as the basis for language arts activities, such as writing poems. Writing first serves as a tool for learning and later becomes one of the possible end-products of the lessons.

    PLAIN TALK REVISION

    Hey Mom and Dad, kids love to learn about apples. They’re naturally curious, and learn best by tasting, smelling, squeezing, rolling, & tossing.

    It’s so much fun.

    They love sharing the experience with their classmates, and can’t wait to write home about what happened. And the feelings they express in the special diaries we give them are priceless.

    You’ll be giving your kids a head start at putting their thoughts down on paper. One of life’s most important skills.

    And what better way to get them out of your hair for a while?


    Can you dig the difference?

    I do a lot of work in the computer networking field, and often need to read product specs & documentation. And it drives me nuts!

    Why is this stuff so full of techno babble, hyperbole, and long-winded bafflegab? Is all of the rocket science talk supposed to impress me into wanting to do something with their gadgetry?

    Almost every product or service imaginable has a technical side, and you can never over educate. But it shouldn’t feel like school.

    Maybe you think you’re selling a commodity, and there’s not much to the customer’s decision, but price. Think again. There is always a technical differentiator.

    One of the greatest skills you can acquire is to be able to boil the froth off complex concepts, so that they become easy to understand.

    Customers crave facts, and proof, even logic in order to feel comfortable with their decisions, once you’ve stirred up their emotional desire.

    Inject them painlessly with web copy that comes across as “plain talk”!
